Don’t be a Haighter on this Street

On the Streetz of San Francisco. Haight-Ashbury. Saturday September 3, 2023. San Francisco, CA

The Haight-Ashbury streetz are filled with colorful people, sweet smells, many, many, did I say many? Vintage stores. And a Peaceful, Happy Vibe which gives us a proof positive purely groovy sensation that the the Summer of Love lives lively in 2023

For the last 25 years, when I ask about this area of town, people I know have told things like:

Ahh, Haight-Ashbury isn’t what it was like in the 60’s and 70’s. Yuck, you need to be careful down there, it’s filled with druggies and pickpockets. Or, Watch out, the only thing left of the good old days is Amobea Records, go there, get some tunes, a pen or a sticker and get out. Even a couple weeks before I made my first ever trip to San Fran, I heard: Everything in San Francisco is so bad right now, houses cost a fortune and there’s no one Fun here anymore, all the artists moved away and all I see are drug addicts and clone like techies who know how to stare at their phone but can barely order a Latte utilizing their verbal skills

Enough of the Haters, let’s get back to the Peace, Love and Happiness that myself, my sister and granddaughter all enjoyed on this special Saturday in early September 2023. Prior to the trip, my daughter had all the days planned out, I decided I would slide along with the flow and go and see everything on the plan. I stayed pretty close to doing all the planned itineraries, except for day 2 when they went to some museum, I was just exhausted, needed a bit of sleep, then I headed Down Ventura to Shop. That will be a different post. This is about the “unplanned” Saturday, when she and her boyfriend had not so secret Tattoo plans. LJBOL

My daughter said, me and Debi could take my granddaughter and do whatever. So that’s what we did. My sister took me to an unreal magazine store-Heath Newstand, Saturday wanderers, nice workers including Leandra. And magazines not seen anywhere else. Lots of Art, Fashion, Avant- Garde even random pickle ball and cooking magazines. I nabbed a few good titles including Printing Fashion #3, OFFICE duo issue, TMRW, a Magazine Curated By Francesco Risso and my favorite-032c. And guess what they even do shipping! I didn’t have to drag around 10 pounds of magazines. Oh and check the sale section at the front, some $40+ mags and books are just $5-$10. I lose time in stores like this so I have no idea how long I was there, but I noticed coffee and pastries were ready for a picnic outside the store, so I headed out for the tasty treats from Tartine.

I didn’t go into Tartine, but did see the line to get it, very loooong. I thought the coffee was super good, my ham and cheese croissant was tasty but someone put hot peppers or Jalapenos in it, so I just ate around most of those. Not a spicy guy in general. And I had a celeb sighting: Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-Ines and Dives pulled up in a giant air-conditioned van like limo car. I was coming out of Heath magazines as he was going in a special VIP entrance to Tartine with his dog! Oh yeah, everyone who lives in San Fran has a dog

Okay, sorry my brain is filled with non stop words tonight. I’ll make it quicker, but before the H-A area of town. After the first mag store, I was lucky to be dropped my off at the second Mag store, see there are no more magazine stores in Hawaii, even the airport has like 6 titles now. And I like magazines. Many an INSPO has come from a S.F magazine store magazine. I just bought 2 mags at the second place-Smoke Signals on Polk St. Make sure you say hi to Fahdy, tell him Streetzblog sent you. After the Mag Store, I bought some water and headed to the park, where my granddaughter was making pizzas with sand and flowers, she offered me one and since, Scott Mckenzie sings-Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair, I ate a flower. She kinda’ freaked out a bit, Debra rolled her eyes and YAH! time for Haight Street. I can not believe we waited until the last day and I cant believe it took this much time to get there in this blog.

Haight-Ashbury

(It’s perfectly ok if you skip ahead to this section, I won’t get sad)

We scored yet another awesome parking spot. 2x on the trip, I asked for the parking Angels to join me and both times, it worked. We got out of the car, walked like maybe a block and we hit the Tie Dye store – Love On Haight Tie Dye Emporium. WOW! My granddaughter picked out her favorite shirt and Debi got my daughter a bag. I took pix and videos and goofed around. And we had our first Jimi Hendrix + Jerry Garcia sightings of the whole trip. There was also a purchase of a flo-orange Kazoo. Maybe..More on that later

Perfect Quote from the Love on Haight website:

PsySonic, Exotic, Iconic Haight-Ashbury Stop #1

Next up we wandered a bit, then took a break at Gus’s Grocery Store. What an exceptionally perfect place for eating, drinking and people watching. When I first set out to do the H-A piece, I thought it would be just pix of interesting folks. It became way more than that and more. I’d recommend getting some sandwiches at Gus’s some drinks, caffeine, water etc. and sitting outside to enjoy the fashion show that fills this street.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what we saw:

I suspect there were all category of folks. One thing is no matter who they were, they ALL dressed for the Haight-Ashbury experience, all in their own way. Which fits perfectly and is alright by me. Be yourself because there is only one you. You don’t ever want to think of what others may think of your clothes. I always say: Wear what makes you feel comfortable, wear what you like, I don’t care if you are 5 or 85, color your hair, wear and look exactly as you feel best when you awake in the morning.

More pix from the Haight-Ashbury Runway:

Heard on the Steetz:

I overheard someone saying: They were looking for the Painted Ladies, thus I looked for ladies who were painted upon. Alas, I didn’t see any. Later I found out a Painted Lady is a colorful Victorian-style house owned by various movie & music stars and the affluent techies.

I am so glad I was able to go to San Francisco and extra happy to have such a fun day with my sister and grand-daughter. Maybe it’s the people you are with that makes the day. Maybe It’s because of the beautiful sunny weather, maybe it was a Saturday during Labor Day weekend. Maybe Haight-Ashbury is back in it’s re-amagined glory days. A sweet and colorful vibey kinda’ way day. For me, it was all of the above, plus the stars aligned magnificently for a fun filled day of Tie Dye, Magazine & Vintage clothing shopping, people watching, picnic eating, picture and video taking and most of all… Pure Joy in the famous Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.

Kazoo-Ya…maybe no go Kazoo-Ya

So remember the Kazoo was bought when we first arrived, It made it to our picnic and blared in my right ear so bad that my ear HURT! So the super fast black bird took it away. Promise was made that another would be purchased after we went a few more blocks down the street, then back to the Tie Dye store for another Kazoo.

I “Procured one and it went to the park with us. There it was even louder and I am pretty sure it got stolen by someone sitting near by. Check out Debra’s face Pre and Post Kazoo. PERFECT!

Thank You to Debi for being oh so very patient, I’m a rather slow moving object when I’m in my favorite element of people watching, iPhone snapping, sticker giving, and window/real shopping.

And Thank You to Adalyn for being in such great spirits throughout the colorful neighborhood.

I am so glad we sat down to pic-nic. I had my favorite food, Salami butter and bread. Which I haven’t had in years. OMG, I do miss it. And both Debi and I were able to feed and hydrate Adalyn with her favorite food-cooked salmon. And I snuck in an extra Matcha tea for Debi-HeHeHe… (Don’t tell her, but she usually reads the Streetz…blog. I kinda doubt she will get to all of these words). There’s times when blogging is fun and there are times it can be frustrating. Today there were so many words flowing in and through my brain, it was fun just a tad overwhelming! And I find this funny, I know I was on Haight Street, but Ya’ know, I never did see Ashbury nor did I bump into the “only” place to go on the street-Amoeba Records. I bet it was on Ashbury. Hahahaha

Sometimes, haters just be hating, maybe they read some media story or took a wrong turn at night, who knows, the day I was here, the Haight was Pure, Positive, Peace, Love and Happiness from start until stop. When you’re going to San Francisco, Make sure You wear flowers in your hair and look for the Good in people, bring others good vibes, radiate joyously and I sure hope if you visit, you will have a extraordinary day in Haight-Ashbury.

What do you think of Haight-Ashbury? What year did you see it good? Do you have any groovy tips on where to go next time I visit H-A? Will you where flowers in your hair? Let us know below in the comments section. Until, next posting..I’ll See You On The Streetz…blog!

May Peace, Love and Happiness radiate in you and to ALL the people you may meet today and everyday!

Attack of the Metallics S/S 2015

Silver, Gold, and other Metallic kicks-Spring/Summer 2015

151belgravimle_gunmetal_anglepair

Metallics are all the rage in Spring/Summer 2015 for Men’s shoes. I’ve had my eyes on an awesome pair of Silver Metallic Jimmy Choo’s for a couple of months. Since then, I’ve come across many more in so many fun and exciting colors. Not sure whether to get some silver kicks or one of these other patent mirrored metallic’s.

I’m so stuck on finding a nice pair of patent metallic kicks, I’m calling it a trend. It could just be something I’m obsessing over. But from the look of the pictures below, it’s not just me looking to rock some bling.

Enjoy the pictures. Let me know if you thing it’s a trend or just an obsession in the comments section. Have a nice and colorful week!

Rick Owens Metallic Silver:

Blue, Purple, Red and Gunmetal Metallics all available at SSENSE

Go for the Gold!

And my favorite Metallics: The Giuseppe Zanotti Navy/Bronze/Silver High Top Sneakers. I did have these on my feet one day at Barney’s. The size they had were just a bit too big and they are a bit pricey. The day I do really well at work, win the lottery or hit it big in Vegas, this is the pair I will buy. Sure hope they are still around when that day happens!

I spot Some nice Patent on This video

Last year, I was very close to getting a pair of Jimmy Choo’s. They were Black patent leather. They just didn’t have my size and it was 8:55 p.m-Not the greatest time to shop.  I can’t quite tell what color these patent leather kicks are, but if they look as good in person as they do in this video, I just may need to re-visit my Jimmy Choo dealer. You may not even notice them, they flash across the screen so fast!

Also, it’s pretty sweet how this video uses 2 of the top 8 visual trends of 2015 in their video. Monochromatic Color and Sensory Immersion. Rob the original brings Major Hair Flair to the NBA Play-Offs

Tim Duncan Designed Hair

Rob the Barber’s got it going on with some amazing designs just in time for the NBA Play-Offs. I’m not a big fan of the Heat or the Spurs, but these hair designs are out of this world. Somehow I was lucky enough to stumble upon Rob on my Instagram earlier today, so I could show these pix to you. From what I gather, he uses standard barber clippers and razors for the cut and colored eye liner to make the fun and exciting colors. Here are more Spurs and Heat themed pictures of his designs:

Here is a selection of some the hottest designs from Rob:

Lanvin F/W2014-15 has Landed

Goth Vibe, Nice Digs, Cool Shoes

Highlights of this show include:

  • The Setting:  Stylish, Upper class, Beautiful, Greek, New Romantic, and Classic.  I expect a King or Queen to step out any moment during the show.  And then towards the end, they pan to the see-thru ceiling. I could for sure spend a day or two here. I bet there’s a Kings Thrown somewhere in the same building, maybe some crown jewels too!
  • The Shoes:  Green Shoes with matching shirts, Blue Shoes with matching attire, Orangish/Red shoes with a Red top and what looks like Silver Shoes, once again matching the clothing. I’m a shoe guy, thus the shoes and the matching clothes are very nice.
  • Long, Long Skinny Scarves:  Yep, they sure are long and skinny.  They add some what I would call “Style Francais” to the looks.  I just wouldn’t wear one out on the town while drinking cocktails, I would probably trip on it.
  • The Music:  Fits the setting very nicely. A bit Abstract, Lounge tinged with a bit of darkness to it.  Gives it a nice laid back, crunchy, pre and post Modern French Vibe to the show.
  • The Black and White Backpack:  When I was in NYC  in December, the Jordans I saw the most on people were the crisp, clean, Black and White with a tad of red-Jordan 13’s as worn by Denzel Washington in the movie, “He Got Game”. I think people wore them to stand out in the cold wintery weather or to blend in with the snow and street. This Backpack would go perfectly with those shoes.  It would also be nice to use to carry things to and from work, especially while wearing a classic black suit and a white button down shirt.
  • Oh and did I mention the Blue, Green, silver and Orangish Red Shoes?

The Marc of Jacobs-NYFW-F/W 2014

Dressed to Thrill

Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2014 Runway Show-Tuesday February 11, 2014

Pretty in Pink-streetzblog

The Pre-Show Wait. Pretty in Pink. Rock Star Style

Last year at this time of year, I dreamed of being invited to New York Fashion Week to blog about the Styles. This year, of course I still want to dream of going there for Fashion Week. Although, since I’ve learned so much over the last year digitally, I was very close to being there without actually being there. I was able to watch the Marc by Jacobs Runway show live on my iPhone and capture photos as if I was there. Best parts about this, is I didn’t need to wear a warm coat or battle it out with all the other bloggers  for a good camera shot.  Thank You Marc Jacobs for playing the Fashion Show Live, I had a great time watching the show, listening to the music and taking pictures of all the  colorful new  clothes.

The Pre-Show

MJ Cameras-streetzblog

Look at all the People with cameras!!!

Sooo many people with cameras. WOW! The Gallery you’re about to see is all the Pre Show hype. See the girls looking at their phones? Some people socializing and probably the best two pictures-Marc Jacobs himself! in the crowd talking to the fans and the press. I had a pretty nice vantage point to get him in the pre show pictorial-Sweet!

The Show-Part One

It was pretty interesting to watch what happens at a NY Fashion Week show prior to the Show.  As you noticed, some people socialized, others checked out their phones, and I did notice some nice black bags that were probably filled with some nice Swag. Next up will be a TON of pictures of the actual Fashion Show. The Show goes from start to finish. I took a lot of nice pictures of the new bags, tried to get some nice shoe shots and of course nabbed a bunch of the stylish colorful new out fits for F/W 2014.  Some stripes, some plaids, some bright colors, some daring handkerchiefs over the mouth, and I do notice a bit of a “Divergent” vibe with the pigtails and look of the un smiling models. Very interesting. I also notice a lot of grey..maybe getting ready for the Big movie “Fifty Shades of Grey?” I hope you enjoy the Show, it took me a pretty long time to put it together. A lot of uploading and downloading.  I’m sure there must be an easier way to do it, maybe by the next Fashion Week, I’ll figure it out. For now, ENJOY the show!

The Show-Part Two

The next portion we will see some more color and the handkerchiefs I mentioned earlier, along with some more scowling youthful faces and some more pigtails. Once Again, bringing us that post apocalyptic  look of oppression, style, money and women’s power.   I hope you enjoy Part Two of the Marc by Marc Jacobs F/W 2014 Runway Fashion show. Personally I liked part two the best. The fierce looks, The Hunger Games vs Divergent theme, the red pigtails, the fantastic colors along with more shades of grey.

The Finale, The designers and the crowd goes back out to the Snow

Here we see the full line-up of the designs, the designers and finally a few pictures of how very quickly everyone gets up to go.  Me personally, I would probably sit and savor the moment. But, maybe everyone is on their way to the next show?  Here’s the finale.

You can purchase Marc by Marc Jacobs clothes, shoes, and accessories here. And my parting shot, is one of my favorite pairs of Kicks that I own. Marc Jacobs Brown/Gold Patent Leather kicks from 2013.

Opening Ceremony Style 2014

If you like Puffy, you’d like These looks

German Smurfs. Picture Courtesy of Flare.com

German Smurfs. Picture Courtesy of Flare.com

I like to talk positive in 95% of my blog posts. And in this one, I wouldn’t say I’m being Negative. I just think the looks shown at the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in general were pretty awkward and waaaay to Puffy. Maybe, the designs were made more for warmth than style. But with all the money everyone has, Why not make one look for the Ceremony, then have another look for the pre and post events?

With this post, I didn’t do any research on who the designers were or didn’t even look at any other blogs or news sites. The opinions listed below are from my own Fashionista view of what my impression of this year’s looks were like. Some were good, but most were not that stylish from my view-point. My number one favorite was the Netherlands.  What did you think of the looks?  Let me know in the comments section.

*Sorry if I missed your country, this is the second time I’ve done a Live blog to the opening Ceremony and it’s a bit overwhelming to keep up.

Bermuda:  Red Short pants! Suit Jackets, Ties, White button down shirts, Long dark socks and black business man shoes. Did I say Short pants? Guess they were Bermuda Shorts. Too Funny.

Bulgaria:  Pretty styling looking ski jackets in bright blue flashy yellow with fashionably fierce furry hoods.

Brazil:  Bright Yellow Shirts. Funny looking thick bulky scarves tied in awkward knots. Not one of my favorite looks.

Great Britain:  Dark Blue Slick looking puffy down jackets with burgundy hoods. The best look so far. Something I would and could actually wear. (Adidas)

Venezuela:  Extremely Enthused One guy in multi colored garb.

Germany:  Yellow, Green, Light Blue Jackets, with red pants.  They looked like some kind of cartoon character, I guess maybe multi colored smurfs?  Don’t know who designed these uniforms, but Whoa, must have been someone who went to too many Love Parades! Pretty daring look, just way too bright and cartoonish for my taste.

Israel:  Just some bright, light blue and white ski clothes. Not quite daring enough.

Ireland:  Kind of a New Balance version of horizontal Camo? Nice Green color with Horizontal colors interwoven throughout.   The most Street look as of yet.

Italy:  Usually a pretty Stylish country. This attempt was close with the dark blue and white striping. But the coats were too bulky to show off the style correctly.  Must be really cold this year in Italy.

Canada:  Very conservative. Looked like Canadian Mounty’s/Firemen. Classic Red and Black Canadian Colors.

Kyrgyzstan:  Looked like they were wearing hand-made hats made of Newspaper. Ooops.

China:  Once again, way too much bulk in the down jackets. Made them look “stuffed” instead of fit. I’d keep these coats for the post game warm down. And have another look for the Opening Ceremony.

Lithuania:  Flourescent Green puffy jackets. with bright yellow pants. hats and scarves with the same bright colors.

Liechtenstein:  Fairly interesting attempt at Pop-Art.  In Red, Blue, White, just looked a bit too done already, in the 80’s.

Mexico:  Dark blue or black with white trim.  Looked just like that movie Tron. If they turned off the lights you would just see silhouettes with white lines.  Interesting.

Netherlands:  I usually like this team, since Blue and Orange are my two favorite colors together.  And this year they didn’t fail me.  Nice, Thin not puffy dark blue down jackets with awesome bright Orange accents and interiors.  A really nice look. something I would Rock on the streetz of New York and probably Chicago.

USA:  Where’s Waldo?  I do live in the U.S.A, thus you can tell I’m not bias at all. I do not like these silly over decorated, gaudy sweaters and hats. And goofy baggy white sweat pants. They remind me of Where’s Waldo? No kidding here. If I were the US design team, I would have gone with a  much more understated look. A dark blue thin down Jacket from Uniqlo would look nice. With some tailored dark blue or black fitted slacks and some hip shoes like the new flat soled Doc Martins or some other Hi-End Sneaker like a Rick Owens or a Marc Jacobs. Note: The backs of the sweaters were looking ok, some nice Stars and a simple USA. It’s the front that was way too much.

Poland:  White, White, Grey, White and some red. I guess I’ve never been there, so don’t quite get the look.

South Korea:  Colors and style looked good. but once again way too puffy.

BTW:  The music has been pretty hip, pretty nice Dance beat throughout the ceremony.  A bit generic at times, but still sounded pretty progressive for the Olympics. I thought the London Olympic Opening Ceremony had the best music ever!

Chinese Taipei:  Bright Blue gowns like a High School graduation.  Whoa!

Togo:  Ok I guess the winter Olympics is more about warmth than style. I’m starting to catch on.  Interesting colors on top-looks like yellow and a dark purple?. And some pretty cool icy silver Zippers on the ski pants.

Ukraine:  Some nice street style jackets.  Kinda Camo, kinda animal print. Not sure which animal-maybe an Owl? Interesting look. I Didnt even notice the pants.

Second BTW:  I’ve had enough. But I need to wait until I see Russia,it  wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t watch long enough to see the host Country’s Clothes. So, I will continue with this “Live” blog from the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

France:  Grey down jackets made to look like suit jackets with an awkward khaki colored pant. The grey tops were a nice attempt at some style, but the pants were like goofy American office attire.

Third BTW:  The silly announcer just said that some people have been dancing for 25-30 minutes. Like it’s something lame to do, what’s wrong with him? Never been to a Rave before?  People dance for 4-6-8 hours and it’s fun, yes FUN.

Switzerland:  All Bright Red all the Time.

Sweden:  Didnt notice the clothes but I saw the NY Rangers Goalie waving the flag. That’s pretty cool.

Fourth BTW:  Ok when is this going to be over. I need to get dressed to go out for the night.

Russia:  Finally, OMG. And they are wearing Red, White and Blue? A classic Russian look. with a bit of 2013 Nu School  Docker’s flair in their red pants.  It would be really cool if they played a “Pussy Riot” song when they came out. But don’t think that Prez P would dig that.

Well, that’s the official Streetzblog wrap up of what most of the Countries wore. I liked the London Olympic Opening Ceremony much better. The music and the designer duds, but it was kinda fun to live blog the Ceremony. Hopefully, I’ll have the night off in two years and will once again bring you the next Olympic Opening Ceremony of Style.

Have a nice Weekend. See you on the streetz. Now I have just enough time to get myself dressed for an evening of fun and Frivolity. No puffy jacket for me tonight. Gonna’ Rock my dark blue and black plaid pants, a black comfy yet fitted T from H&M, and my flat soled black Doc Martins, my most favorite and MOST comfortable shoes I’ve owned in years!
