A Runway Show, Shopping and a Tad of Vintage Primo?

On the Streetz…blog! Goodwill Goes Glam 2023-Celebrating Diversity. Runway show produced by: Lotus and Lime.

Date: Thursday August 17, 2023. Location: Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. City & State: Honolulu, HI. Pictures and Runway Review by: Scott Mackenzie: Artist, DJ + Clothing Designer. Blogging on the Streetzblog since 2011

Goodwill Goes Glam Runway show and VIP shopping is one of my favorite evenings of the year. What can be better, a glamorous runway show + first dibs on designer duds from Goodwill’s finest quality of inventory!

Each year, Goodwill selects local fashion designers to produce the show. 2023 electrified the stage with Hawaiian and Japanese inspired, Mother daughter team of Kim and Jade Alexis Ryusaki from Lotus and Lime. Celebrating Diversity was the theme, and Lotus and Lime brought it with various genres of clothing and models, who were all sizes, shapes and ethnicity.

We see up-cycled jeans and intricate, high level glam. Tailored sophistication and distressed modern. Dessert sand combat boots withe many various looks and designs. The powerful triangle shape was hidden and in clear view. My favorite was the Primo beer patterns, subtle Primo fabrics hidden in other patterns, and pronounced for all to notice. Either way it was quite fun to view and feel the nostalgia of Hawaii’s famous beverage. Let’s all give a ginormous Chee-Hoo to Lotus and Lime and Primo beer!

The show also featured live and recorded music. Colorful mood enhancing lighting many times matching the clothes. And near the finale we enjoyed many models dancing off the runway, near the dinner dignitaries. Which included Hawaii governor Josh Green along with the first lady, Jaime Kanani Ushiroda Green.

Attention to detail, high level tailoring and a lot of preparation was put into the show produced by Lotus and Lime, bringing there A game to the yearly celebration, shopping and fundraising event!

Goodwill goes Glam 2022

Kumu Micah Kamohoali’i Produced The Art of the HoLoku. Goodwill Goes Glam. Thursday August 18, 2022. Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Oahu, HI.

This Goodwill Goes Glam Fashion Show started off the best of all that I’ve been too, and I think I have been to them all. A scene straight out of the turn of the century, featured regally dressed Hawaiians with some impressive acting skills. Then the drums banged dramatically throughout the hall, unleashing the mesmerizing Hula performance. The Impact of the start to the show was the best ever. Chicken Skin is the best way I can convey the feeling within me. Quite an enchanting, hypnotic, start to this well produced event, like no other at any of the past Goodwill Goes Glam shows. Oh so beautiful, that I almost forget to take pictures, I was so caught up in the moving moments.

Well known performers, Amy Hanaiali’i and Jeff Peterson performed live as the exquisite gowns appeared on stage. These dresses are known as Holoku, European style gowns popularized by the Hawaiian Monarchy and Royal Court. They feature a full length silhouette with a very long train, many with full sleeves and a yoke. Originally they were made in rich fabrics including velvet and taffeta.

A Beautiful, Hawaiian Regal Look. Kumu Kicah Kamohoali’i.

All of the original gowns and dresses were found at Goodwill Stores in Hawai’i, Las Vegas and California. Kamohoali’i used the original dress’ and up-cycled them for this stunning fashion presentation. He and his team did alterations, added embellishments, and Kapa inspired prints. Dying the garments in vibrant colors perfectly made for the models and Hawaiian Royalty.

Micah learned from his grandparents to make these ancient Hawaiian designs. First they would prepare Wauke-Mulberry/Papyrius Papyrifera to make Kapa (the inner bark made into fabrics), which were then shaped into garments. They showed him how to dye the sheets of bark into a rainbow of colors using roots, leave’s and berries. Then they would take the dyes and use a bamboo stick, carved with various shapes to press them in to the material to make the various prints.

Each pattern is typically repeated throughout a piece and each shape like an arrow, triangle, or jagged circle has deep meaning in Hawaiian Culture. Just yesterday, Myself and my daughter learned that the jagged circle repeated in patterns can be know as either a Sea Urchin or Ra-The All Powerful Sun. We were making our own patterns on fabric, with meticulously carved bamboo sticks.

Shown below is First Lady Mrs. Dawn Ige presenting Lei at the end of the show to Kumu Micah Kamohoali’i. And the Streetzblog Owner with Kumu Micah Kamohoali’i. (Picture courtesy of Amanda Stevens) And interesting. I was at a Holiday Expo prior to this event and I saw a nice green long sleeved shirt at the expo. At the time I didn’t know the designer, I just liked the look and when I put it on, I felt powerful Mana from the garment. I bought it and it turned out it was made by Dezigns by Kamohoali’i. Thus, I wore it to this special occasion.

Goodwill Goes Glam

LEGACY with Anne Namba

Goodwill Goes Glam 2019

Goodwill Goes Glam is one of my favorite times of the year.  Fashion show then shopping for deals.  This year we celebrated 30 years of Island Fashion with Anne Namba.  Then it was on to the shopping.  Saw some people pick up some nice Louis this year.  I didnt quite do as well as usual.  Although I did score an autographed Miami Hurricane jersey. Which I will most likely give to a friend who digs that team.

The pictures for 2019 are more artsy than actual Fashion photography. Was testing out some new lenses and filters.  I started with 300 and whittled them down to about 100.  It’s kind of like watching a video with pictures.  Hope you enjoy it and that you can feel the vibe of the show.  You can see a couple of  past years of Goodwill goes Glam 2017 HERE and 2018 HERE

This marks the 8th year of this annual event. Have a great day or night and see you on the Streetz…blog!

Goodwill Goes Glam

Honolulu, Hawaii: July 18, 2018 Blaisdell Exhibition Hall

Goodwill Goes Glam one of my favorite events of the year. Fun, Fashion Show, Fun, Shopping and more Fun!

First you see the Runway show. Second you shop the freshest gear to be found.  If you move quick enough, you’ll get some pretty stellar labels and high quality clothes.

This Years theme:  The Fashion Edit

This Years Designers: Allison Izu Song x Summer Shiigi

This Years Brands:  Allison Izu & Ten Tomorrow

This Years Camera:  Canon DSLR (Not an iPhone)

The Shopping And After Party

Tips:

  • Head to the Shoes and Purses first. They are next to each other. One year, I found both Prada and Bape kicks in my size. Score!
  • Next, straight to the Aloha wear. Do not stop at the toys or sports clothes on the way. The best Aloha gear goes quick. And there are some very High quality shirts and brands.  Tori Richard, Reyn Spooner, Cooke Street, Ono, Tommy Bahama & More
  • Now, it’s time for the sports jerseys.  This year, my friend Amanda scored a primo condition Walter Peyton Bears Jersey. And I bought a Mitchell & Ness  MAYS 660 BONDS Jersey in perfect condition.
  • Set a budget ahead of time. Both years, I had a pre set budget and put back what was not in budget.  Just like a sample sale, a budget is needed.
  • Grab Quick, Grab Fast, put back what you don’t want.  The first half hour is just like a NYC Sample sale. You want to get the good stuff before it’s gone. Trick to this is don’t think much, just go for what looks good, grab it fast. Then weed through your goods before check-out.  People were eyeing my Willie Mays jersey for close to 2 hours, seeing if I would put it back.  And I was eyeing a pair of Gucci sneakers, both the jersey and the shoes did not go back.

The Goodwill Goes Glam Runway Show kicks off the Glam shopping weekend. When Goodwill takes over the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall to sell some super excellent used and new goods with the proceeds going to Goodwill’s Education and Employment Training Programs.

This is the 6th Annual GLAM! Fashion show utilizing some pretty awesome fashion finds found at Goodwill. This year’s presentation takes you on a 40 year adventure divided into 5 sections: Generation, Retrospective, Transformation, Moments & Confessions.

After the Show, you could shop the Runway looks along with a special section of Kaypee Soh pieces and with a good eye, you could nab some great designer duds at inexpensive prices.

This year’s presentation was produced by award-winning artist and designer Kaypee Soh. Along with co producers Amy Azada, Rene Rodriguez and my friend who got us in as VIP; Amanda Stevens. (Rolanda, Mina, Kat and I all Thank You for the terrific seats & invite to this special GLAM! Fashion Show). Hair & Make-Up:  Paul Brown & Jonathan Freitas.

Shown below are pictures from the Show. You’ll see some Glamorous Glitter, Pop Art Colors, a bit of Camo and even some Dark Goth eclectic pieces. It’s pretty unbelievable what one can do with some creative minds, a bit of fancy hair and makeup with Goodwill clothes. definitely very GLAM!

Goodwill Goes Glam Fashion Show 2017

Sexy & Colorful!

Sweet Mint Green Jacket with matching Mickey/Minnie Ears. More Color and our first male model of the evening.

Camo, Stripes and Big Bags. Very On-Trend for July 2017.

The Glitz, The Glamour, the Big Bags and the Sparkling Golden GLITTER!

Glitterama! And as the pix below show it was nice and shiny IRL BTW: The S/S Mens Commes Des Garcons has some pretty good-looking Glittery baggy shorts for guys.  Will we see all this glitter and glamour  on the Streetz?

The Red Dress was pretty incredible and dramatic.  Some darkness lurking, and a lot of pieces of clothing put together to become a dress worn by a super happy model.

Darkness with the white and Black Gothic wedding vibe. Then Pop Art brings the show to a close with a Nice, Bright, Playful, Avant-Garde, Colorful themed Finale.

The Finale. Pix of Kaypee Soh and Amanda.  (You can also watch a video of the finale on the @streetzpix Instagram)

Big Score of the Night. BAPE’s and Black patent PRADA Hi-Tops, both in my size! Later this week, I’ll show you the total haul.  I’m glad I had a pre set budget. Putting back things was much harder than grabbing them. And sure am glad I’ve had practice at NY Sample sales.  One more minute and someone else would have had both of these kicks!

*Seen on site at the Runway Show:  Mayor Kirk Caldwell, Project Runway’s Kini Zimora, Dawn Amano-Ige, & Grace Lee with Steve Uyehara.

**The Shopping continues Saturday July 22nd and Sunday July 23rd at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. If you’re on Oahu, I’d suggest checking it out.  They also have food, a selfie zone and other fun things to play, see and do.
