What the characters wear for The Hunger Games:Mockingjay – Part 1.
Kurt & Bart are the costume designers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2. They are self-taught fashion designers who give much of their career education and vision to hanging out in the NYC club scene in the late 80’s. They previously created the now defunct street-wear brand Design Asylum. Film credits include the Dallas Buyers Club, Stoker, and Step-Up 3D. They deigned many of Britney’s big vids including Slave 4 You, Toxic and Me against the Music. They’ve also worked with other musicians including David Bowie, Courtney Love, Pink, and Justin Beiber.
Recently the two were nominated for a 2014 Costume Designers Guild award for their work on the Dallas Buyers Cub.
You and I know Kurt and Bart from their work on HBO’s How to Make it in America which streetzblog covered a couple of years ago before the very sad and sorrowful day that the HTMIIA went off the air.
In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part , the duo directed the looks of the main actors along with 10,000 extras! Let’s take a look at some of the inspiration and looks we’ll see in the Mockingjay. The premiere was on Tuesday November 18th in Hawaii and it opens up across America this Friday November 21st, 2014.
Fictional character, Cinna/Lenny Kravitz knew that the Mockingjay would become the iconic symbol for Katniss and the districts. I will miss Cinna in the movie, but his inspiration sets the table for the mood board for the movie. Before his demise/death he secretly designed the Mockingjay clothing for Katniss. In the movie, the main battle gear Katniss wears is modular and flexible with magnetic wings, that are easily removed. The chest plate inspired by clothing worn by Japanese Kyudo archers. The combat jacket has nylon webbing detailing that crisscrosses at the waist to cinch it to create a magnificent silhouette.
Most of the marketing and all of the posters have shown the characters in BLACK to give us a sense of the mood to come in the new movie. I’m a color guy, so this is the part I find quite fascinating, The rad part of Katniss’ outfit is not just black-black, it glistens with a quite nice iridescent blackish-blue glow molded directly into the materials of the breast-plate and wings. And her gloves give off the golden color of the Mockingjay.
Interesting IMBD type tidbit: Jen Law was getting hit very often on her forearm from shooting so many arrows, thus, the designers added a special built-in arm guard on to her shooting arm to protect her during the filming of the movie.
Peeta wears a perfect design for the exquisite real world Diner en Blanc. It’s a white-on-white look utilizing pieces created by big time fashion designers Maison Martin Margiela and London fashion brand Unconditional. And check this out! The collar of Peeta’s shirt is actually made of paper designed by David Mason. It takes inspiration from paper collars worn by men in the late 19th century. Now, that is pretty trippy. Paper?
Johanna wears a white Alon Livne gown and guess what? a pair of Alexander Wang booties. At least that’s what she’s wearing in the Capitol Couture collection. In the movie, there’s not much glamor happening.
Wears beautiful architectural Szha Hadid for United Nude shoes and is accessorized by her standard issued statement jewelry by Alexis Bittar. She can also be seen in 2 extra-large men’s shirts buttoned together to form an oversized 4 sleeve dress! You’ll also notice her wearing a kerchief with a graphic map of District 13 printed on it. See if you can count how many times she changes up the look of the kerchief, I counted at least 6x.
She is missing all of her glitz and glamor from the first two movies. She is now in District 13 and not in the Capital, thus no fancy wigs and futuristic make-up. And she is pretty frickin’ upset that she doesn’t have her gear. Wait until you see her. She doesn’t even look like the same person!
Caesar/Stanley Tucci (Stanley Tucci as made famous from the movie, The Devil Wears Prada)
Wears a dynamic floral print suit that will have the fashion world buzzing.
President Coriolanus Snow/Donald Sutherland
Wears silk brocade dressing gowns and divine looking and feeling wool and cashmere blended jackets.
What to Wear to the MOCKINGJAY
To get your own Mockingjay game on. Check out the Hunger Games x Supra (MOCKINGJAY Pack). 2 of the 3 are on sale now at Supra. A 3rd version will be released on Black Friday.
The Supra District 13 Vaider uses carbon fiber embossed SUPRATUF leather similar to the breast-plate worn by the rebels of District 13. It’s matte black nubuck and ballistic nylon and features a 3D Districk 13 tongue logo. It also has a nice mockingjay silhouette that decorates the tongue liner and heel area. and includes a padded flame print mesh for comfort.
The Supra Capital Couture Skytop lV is all white and is a bit more limited, it features, comfy and supple full grain tumbled leather atop a metallic silver SUPRAFOAM midsole and all white rubber outer sole. A special 3 dimensional logo is on the tongue with smooth black pigskin providing pure luxury interior comfort.
The easiest way to get you gear going for Mockingjay is to make your own or buy a shirt with one of my favorite lines from all of the books. If we burn you burn with us.
Here is the shirt I made and wore to the second movie: I guess I need to make a District 13 in a hurry for this week. Shirt is styled by Streetzblog’s own Custom Lock and Chains.
Main Hashtag for the movie: #Mockingjay
See you on the Streetz, this week at a couple parties and at the premiere of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 presented by Power 104.3 and at the premiere of Horrible Bosses courtesy of Krater 963.
Fashion Fun Frantic Frenzy
November 6-9, 2014
Such a fun week to live in Hawaii.
Thursday Morning 5:00 a.m: Alexander Wang x H&M collaboration goes on sale on-line. 7:10 a.m 37th in line at the H&M Store in Waikiki. 8:00 a.m. Everything goes on sale.
The Scuba style Jacket was number one on my list and I was lucky enough to nab the only one hanging in the store. It’s a bit big, but should be fine in NYC in December. Yes, I got caught up in the hype partially from these 2 Alexander Wang x H&M pictures. They got me good.
Thursday Night 8:00 p.m: Jimmy Choo Waikiki Grand Opening Celebration. Attendees dressed up beyond anything I’ve ever seen in Hawaii. The ladies were all in very colorful Versace, Valentino, Calvin Klein and many other designer name brands. With bags from Louis Vuitton, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Coach, and Prada. Beverages and Food included: Comp Martinis and Champagne with Asparagus/Gruyère Canapes. Good thing it was too busy to shop, I really don’t need any more kicks at the moment. And I’m on one of those shopping fasts until 12/17/14.
Friday Night 5:30 p.m: A big goal for me and maybe for you is to get to NY Fashion week sometime. This year, Honolulu did a Honolulu Fashion Week. So, I signed up to volunteer. On Friday night, I was one of the Ushers at the Art of Fashion: The Best of Neiman Marcus and the Kini and Dinko Spring Summer 2015 Runway Shows. It was quite fun, I helped people find their seats, saw many people I haven’t seen in years, met some new friends, saw a bunch of people I only see on Social Media and got to see both shows up close and personal. Here’s some pictures from the Runway Show: The Art of Fashion: The Best of Neiman Marcus. These are courtesy of Matt a fellow usher who knows how to take a nice picture.
And Wow! This cracks me up. Every time I watch a Runway Show on the internet I can’t believe how many people use their phones to take pictures from the front rows of the shows. And guess what? I used my iPhone 5s to take pictures of the 2 Runways shows. In one respect the shows were so good, I’d love to share some real pictures of the exquisite designs. In another, some of these are pretty trippy. I didn’t filter or edit any of them and the models some how look like ghosts or like their image was taken away via Photoshop and replaced by WHITE. Let’s just categorize them as art and that should work.
Super nice post show festivities included the opportunity to get a picture with Kini Zamora. Kini is from Kapolei, HI, He did extremely well at Project Runway Season 13 and along with Dinko Satto, he designed and produced the Kini and Dinko Fashion line. The collection was very good. Sporty-Chic, utilizing similar scuba style neoprene as Alexander Wang x H&M. Also had some other nice fabrics, vibrant whites with blacks, and exquisite draping. And to my surprise, Kini and Dinko had both Men’s and Women’s clothing. I’m sure you can find some nice pictures from the show by Googling Kini and Dinko Hawaii 2014. There were many pro photographers at the show.

HBA Spring 2015 New York Runway Show
Hood By Air or HBA for short is a New York City Based Street-Wear Brand that is Big on slapping their HBA inititals and Hood By Air name on many of their pieces. In 2014, wearing a Nice large block lettered HBA shirt, moon boot or pants is a lot like wearing a classic logo’d DKNY sweatshirt back in 1994.
Let’s take a look-see at the Spring 2015 Men’s and Women’s Hood By Air Collection.
Grey Hi-Top Kicks: These are worn throughout the show. Untied, Tied, pants tucked and untucked. From the Runway show these look like a winner. Subtle grey, yet a bit oversized and just enough embellishment to pop.
Military Jacket: The model with the crutches rocks an extremely nice military style jacket in a perfectly layered look.
1990’s High School Chic: I really dig the style on the female model that has the slouchy black long sleeve shirt with the ripped, worn and torn white jeans. The two pieces are quite different, yet work very nicely together.
Accessories: Check out the dog/human collars on the models. Slightly creepy, yet adds a 3rd or 4th dimension to the show. But don’t think too far into it, then it’s not as fun! And check out the locks and chains. I saw Madonna Rockin’ the Moschino brand lock and chain the other day and I tried it out about six weeks ago. It’s a fun trend, but man oh man, the chains can get heavy come 2:00 a.m. See picture below of Madonna and her Moschino necklace as seen on Jeremy Scott’s Instagram. And me in my silver and gold custom-made necklaces worn with a Streetzblog x Romeo Valentine How to Make it in New York collab shirt from a few years ago.
Added Flavor: When the crowd disperses at the end of the show, did you notice the HBA logo’s on many of the attendees. A nice touch, yet an expected flavor from a brand that knows how to get their Hood By Air out.
Tan/Khaki Kicks: Ugh, the ultimate worst color for sneakers ever. Might be ok for a desert boot, but not cool for sneakers. I wouldn’t even want a free pair of the Khaki Yeezy’s. Just not a good color for kicks.
The Music: A bit too slow for this show. And slightly eerie and creepy, which is ok, I just would have wanted it to be more up-beat. Try and watch the same runway show with one of these 3 tunes, see and feel the vibe change instantly and completely. The clothes even become more vibrant, powerful and splendid to wear! Music courtesy: Aesthetic Perfection-The New Black, Krystal System-I love my Chains and Youth Code-What is the Answer.
See you on the streetz of the Hawaii Fashion Month. Hopefully, if I finish work on time, I’ll be at the grand opening of the new Jimmy Choo in Waikiki on Thursday evening. And of course, I’ll be at the Alexander Wang x H&M launch either on-line, in-store or both. Have a nice Weekend.

Friday October 31st – Halloween 2014, Eat the Street in Honolulu celebrated Dia de los Muertos. The Day fo the Dead. Which is celebrated Halloween thru November 2nd. I was there and took a few pictures of the costumes. At this event, some of the biggest costumes included: Where’s Waldo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman and his crew of buddies and villains, Day of the Dead painted faces, and One Super Scary Clown from Stephen Kings It, with the same name as the Punk-Alt band-Pennywise.
With that Ultra scary clown on American Horror Story keeping me up nights. I will post this scary clown, but probably be too scared to ever look at him again. He did win first prize for the scariest costume at this Eat the Street Event. Enjoy the pictures from Honolulu Hawaii-Or if you’re too scared of clowns, see you later this week at H&M x Alexander Wang and at the Grand Opening of Jimmy Choo in Waikiki.
